A book that has been recommended to me by a number of good friends over the years is Logical Thinking of the Intelligent Child by Linda Chapaillot and Mark Smith. It’s a marvelous book.
If you’d like a few of the the benefits the authors offer from this book, I’ll give you an abstract:
If you have the opportunity to talk to young children, you will most likely have learned that they instinctively have an innate knowledge of numbers that many adults struggle to understand. In this book, the authors trace the origins of mathematics to the development of our cognitive skills. They then show how children’s ability to reason and their desire to explore the real world lead naturally to the discovery of numbers.
They conclude that such an innate need for understanding makes children extraordinarily efficient at learning mathematics and that such learning is not a result of rote memorization. Children are able to develop mathematical understanding by doing, not by reciting.
The book is brilliantly written and well-illustrated, with the authors speaking to parents and teachers of young children, but I should note that it was written in the 1970s, which was an earlier time for school-based mathematics education. Today, there is a little more of a focus on applying mathematics in the real world.
Anyhow, I mention the book because it’s inspiringly pragmatic in that it concludes with the following advice:
“You can also help your children develop an interest in mathematics by finding some puzzles with which to play. Math is part of the real world and so, it is appropriate for children to solve real-world problems with real-world numbers.
These books include problems like:”
We now move to work. This book suggests that we can work out the value of a given number of seconds worth of work in a sealed lead-acid battery by using a little calculus. I’ll quote the authors at length:
“Now suppose that a person has an automobile battery that he wants to recharge by connecting it to the vehicle’s electrical system.
